Choosing a flower bouquet for your wedding is an exciting adventure and it can be a pleasure if you know a few key things to consider when making your decision.
A new bride to be usually has a lot of questions and will have a lot of input from family and friends. It is good to get a second opinion, but it really comes down to what she wants. The bigger questions usually are centered around what style will go with the dress and cost.
Cost is usually a big concern and the flowers certainly should be coordinated with the dress. A modern bouquet of calla lilies would not look as good with a traditional dress as one with clean lines.
The best advice for planning wedding flowers is to consider them first. Yes, the guest list and venue is a big part of it, but if flowers are important to you, you will need to know if the flowers you want are in season.
Some flowers like roses and carnations are in season all year, but if you have your heart set on tulips, hydrangeas, peonies, lilacs, or fall flowers such as dahlias you will need to check with your florist to see what months they are available.
Looking through a bridal magazine, online, or a variation of Kate’s gorgeous Royal bouquet is sure to give you enough picture sources to choose a bouquet style. Some of the most popular styles for today’s bride is a hand tied bouquet and a tear drop bouquet. Tiny charms with verses or photos can be attached to the ribbon on a hand tied bouquet as well as jewels or pearl pins.
Choosing a color scheme can be based on a favorite color, the meaning of the flower of choice, the season of the wedding, or the location such as at the beach in a tropical setting.
Many people decide on a color first and then try to match the flowers, but it is so much easier to choose the flower color, check the season and then plan the wedding date and accessories around that. Mother nature has already done the hard work for us by giving us a gorgeous color palette.
It is also so much more beautiful to use jewels and ribbons to tie in a color not found in a fresh flower rather than altering nature. If you want black or a deep purple flower in your bouquet for example, but you can’t find one you love, try using ribbon to tie that color in. Keep it natural and it will be beautiful!
A good way to get an idea of the cost of a bouquet you find in a magazine is to count the flowers of each type, check the style – hand tied, large cascade, tear drop, etc. Call your florist and ask for a price “range” on a bouquet with the info you have. For example, a hand tied bouquet with 20 roses for a June wedding.
Keep in mind that this is only a price range for one arrangement at this point. Many florists will have a price break when doing all of the wedding flowers. This is just to get an idea to start with in choosing a flower bouquet for your wedding.
